Oocyte Donation

A woman between 18 and 35 years of age can be oocyte donor.

To be accepted into the program of oocyte donation, the donor is subject to a review of its reproductive system that will provide very valuable information about their fertility and their health status. There will be specialist advice in relation to their potential to be mothers, more extensive than a mother with a non-assisted birth.

Previous study:

We do a vaginal ultrasound, which allows knowing the anatomy of women, discovering, for example, the causesof irregular cycles and rule out the presence of cysts, myomas, polyps and other disorders of the reproductive system.
We carry out a gynecological examination, as well as a study of the karyotype - the study of chromosomes - which rules out defects in the future of their own babies.
We confirm the absence of diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C, syphilis, cytomegalovirus, genital herpes, rubella or toxoplasmosis, as well as the blood group and RH blood type.

Egg donation does not reduce the chances of getting pregnant in the future.

Egg donation does not imply reducing the pool of oocytes from the ovaries. If a woman is born with 2 million eggs on average, and only ovulate 400 to 500 times in her reproductive life - about one oocyte per month -- Where are the other oocytes?.

To produce an oocyte from a natural and spontaneous manner every month or every menstrual cycle, nature needs to recruit hundreds of primordial oocytes, some of them will be elected until only one, best of all, reach to the final phase of ovulation. The remaining oocytes, which began to develop in the cycle, will be removed because the ovaries cannot recycle them.

Oocytes will be lost, even when taking contraceptives or during pregnancy, or before puberty. The number of oocytes that we can use is gradually reduced throughout life. With the administration of hormone we can stimulate the growth of oocytes that have begun to develop in a cycle without medication, but that would be lost if we had not stimulated them. Their size is controlled by vaginal ultrasound, to see how they grow and when it is going to ovulate. The only difference is that on this occasion, a greater number of egg cells reach to the ovulation stage.

Technique:

The hormone treatment does not involve a significant risk to the donor when they are conducted in a specialized clinic like Gris Reproducción-CIRH Lab.
The donation is an outpatient procedure. The procedure, after studying the donor, is the controlled stimulation of ovulation after treatment with hormone injections that lasts about two weeks. During this time, the eggs are thoroughly monitored by ultrasound scans and analysis to date of the ovarian extractio. see IVF cycle treatment

In some cases, when the development is excessive, with a risk of hyperstimulation or, conversely, when there is low production, treatment will be cancelled before reaching the donation.

If development is normal, oocytes are extracted in an outpatient treatment lasting approximately 15 to 20 minutes. It is carried out with a vaginal ultrasound control, with a needle puncture-aspiration system, which leaves no visible scars at all. To avoid the inconvenience involved in the puncture of the vagina, the patient sleeps under general anesthesia. An hour later, the woman can go home and continue with her normal life. If there is any discomfort, an analgesic treatment can be carried out to be totally comfortable. In all cases, we assume all costs associated with medical and pharmaceutical treatment, as well as those exams and tests carried out to donors.

Oocyte donation is altruistic, voluntary and anonymous, like other biological donations as blood, bone marrow and other organs. The oocyte trade and financial remuneration for their donation is prohibited by law, since the main objective is to help other women voluntarily. A compensation for the inconvenience, possible travel costs and a possible absenteeism from work is allowed.

We will know the quality of the oocyte, its maturity and ability to be fertilized in each of the willing donors, as we said at the outset, to perform a specialized advice in relation to their potential to be mothers.
